How to Check the Protection of Your Kid's Sunglasses

Apr 3, 2024

Here at Babiators, we love to SHOUT about the importance of sun safety and looking out for your little one’s eyes. That’s because kids receive three times more annual UV exposure than adults, and, shockingly, less than 30% of parents are currently protecting their kids’ eyes.

Research suggests that we receive nearly 80% of our lifetime exposure to UV rays before the age of 18. This is because compared with adults, young eyes don’t process UV rays as effectively which can result in potential problems later down the line. We are on a mission to change this!

Babiators UK

Babiators sunnies provide 100% UV protection and look totally awesome all year round – this is important because UV rays are still harmful when it’s cloudy. Babiators sunglasses are also super comfortable and durable, so your little one can get up to all kinds of mischief without having to worry about breaking or damaging their shades.

If you are concerned about the protection of your little one’s sunglasses, there are a couple of ways you can check to make sure they are providing maximum protection. Let’s go through a couple…

UV light

This one could be a fun activity to try with your little one like a little science experiment. If you happen to have a UV flashlight or backlight flashlight lying around, you can test the lenses of the sunglasses to see how effective they are at blocking harmful rays.

Grab some paper money and shine the light on the note, then when the watermark lights up, put the sunglasses over it. If the watermark stops shining, the sunglasses have UV protection.

You can also do this by just turning off the lights and shining the UV light onto the lenses themselves. If the lenses have been treated correctly, they shouldn’t allow the light to pass through them, and they may show a faint blue or purple glow.

Look for the labels

A much simpler way of making sure your kids’ sunglasses offer the right amount of protection, is by reading the labels, looking for information on the packaging or checking the brand’s website.

You can find information about Babiators protection promise here.

The label/description of your sunglasses should either say that they provide 100% protection against both UVA and UVB, or 100% protection against UV 400.

Check the brand

The final way to make sure that the sunglasses you’ve chosen for your little one have the right amount of protection, is by doing some research into the brand you’ve bought them from.

One simple search around Babiators will tell you all you need to know about the quality of our shades and that they provide 100% protection against harmful rays.

If you can’t find anything about sun safety or the level of protection on any website, product page or blog, then you might want to look into an alternative pair of sunnies for your little one. After all, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

Durability

Sun safety and protection doesn’t always come down to the quality of the lenses. It’s also about how comfortable and durable the sunglasses are, and how long they will last.

There’s no point in getting your child a pair of protective sunglasses that don’t fit properly or that keep falling off – because your child won’t want to wear them, and they may not actually be providing any kind of protection if they aren’t properly covering your child’s eyes.

That’s why our Babiators are comfortable, flexible, durable and fun! Your child will never want to take them off. And with our handy strap, you can be sure that even the most lively of explorers won’t be at risk of losing their sunnies.
