7 reasons why kids need to wear sunglasses
Apart from looking super-cool there are a whole host of reasons your little rock stars should be sporting a pair of sunnies when out and about! Eye protection is something that many parents can overlook before leaving the house so, we want to teach the world that sunglasses should - like sun cream – be an important element to getting ready for the outdoors.

We’ve listed some of the many reasons Babiators should be in yours or your little one’s backpack all year round…
1. Those pesky UV rays!
First and foremost, let’s start with the most obvious cause – protection from UV rays. Ultra-violet rays are form of electromagnetic radiation that comes from the sun. There a 3 types of UV rays but only two (UVA and UVB) rays reach the Earth as UVC wavelengths are absorbed by our Earth’s atmosphere. Too much exposure to UVA light raises your risk of skin damage whereas UVB ray exposure can cause eye diseases such as cataracts.
Plus, did you know that children’s eyes are more susceptible to UV damage? This is because the crystalline lens within the eyes is virtually clear, allowing light and UV radiation to reach the back of the eye.
Many sunglasses’ shoppers forget to check the UV rating before purchasing a pair, so make to select sunglasses that provide 100% UV or UV400 protection, or block both UV-A and UV-B rays. At Babiators, all our Original and Blue Series range offers 100% UV or UV400 protection, so you can rest assured little eyes are 100% protected.
2. Hidden in strain sight
We’ve all been there – caught off guard by the blaring light of the sun, wondering why didn’t I have a handy pair of sunnies at the ready? However, you may not realise the underlying effects of squinting on your eyes. Eye strain causes muscle tension around the eyes and forehead, leading to sore, tired eyes and even headaches.
To prevent eye strain in both indoor and outdoor environments (screens are one of the worst triggers), both glasses and sunglasses are perfect at reducing bright light. More specifically. our Babiators Screen Saver glasses use Blue Light blocking Category 1 lenses which block 55% of Blue Light to help prevent eye strain and protect your child’s eyes.
3. Dust is in the air...
It’s been a while since allergy-season was upon us, but some sufferers experience the irritant of dust, pollen and debris all-year-round. Sunglasses are the perfect accessory to combat dusty environments, such as the playground or the beach.
Plus, all our 0-2yrs Blue Series Babiators come with a free silicone strap, so they’re always secured on little faces, even on windy days. There’ll be no tears from sore eyes while they’re out exploring this awesome world!
4. Fashion statement
For the mini fashionistas in your life, stylish eyewear is sure to be a hit! It’s great to be able to match outfits with your kids, especially using a cool pair of sunnies.
We love seeing our customer pics on Instagram using the Babes in Shades hashtag, so make sure to share all upcoming snaps of your cool dude or dudette.
5. Sunny exposure
Did you know that over our lifetime, over 50% of sun exposure occurs in the first 20 years of our life! This is mostly because children are outdoors much more than adults which why it’s super important to protect young eyes.
Many parents also don’t realise that UV rays, even under an umbrella reflect off surfaces (such as snow) which still transmits harmful rays. So be sure to keep those Babiators to hand even on cooler days.
6. Safe practice
We learn so much from an early stage; look both ways before crossing a road, wash your hands before eating, so why not integrate another good habit into our kid’s lives? Popping on your sunglasses before leaving the house should become just as important as wearing a hat.
7. Independent explorers
As kids start to grow up, many will soon want to take charge of the little things in life. From picking out their favourite shoes for the day to deciding what ice cream they want at the park, the independence of choice making will become increasingly popular!
So, why not add picking out their favourite pair of Babiators to their daily routine!
